Cantor Alwyn Robert Shulman was born, raised and educated in Cape Town, South Africa, where he still maintains close ties with relatives.

After completing high school he studied accounting at Technical College, and in 1979 went to Israel to study Chazzanut. Upon completion of the course he took up a position at the Schoonder St. Synagogue, Cape Town, South Africa after the retirement of the world famous Chazzan Simcha Kusevitzky a"h. Av Beth Din  Rabbi Dushinsky zt"l was the community rabbi at that time. After 10 years in that post, the Shulmans moved to Dublin, where they have now lived for 15 years. His duties include davening, layning, hashgacha, bikkur cholim, weddings,  levayot and  barmitzvah lessons. He is also secretary of the Chevra Kadishah.

His wife Nurit was born in Tel Aviv. After finishing high school in Dortmund, Germany, she was appointed "Educational Training Manager" in a large department store in Berlin.

Soon after making aliyah she met her husband. Their three sons Ronnen, Ilan and Yaron are presently studying or working in London. She currently holds the position of "Head of Hebrew Studies" at Stratford National School.
